We are all members of a family whether it is one of birth origin, a culture, race, sex, residential community or spiritual community. Within these different structures, it is natural for each of us to align with and claim our place in the group where we can freely share our gifts, talents and abilities with ease, joy and glory. Others recognize us by them and allow our strengths to be of assistance and guidance on behalf of the greater good of the whole community.

Sometimes though, that place is not allowed to open up naturally. In some groups, that place is determined by someone else’s idea and motivation of who, what, where and even if we belong in the group.

It is possible that we are given and accept
the duty of filling the role of:

“oldest one and must care for everyone else”,“weakest one that everyone can run over
and take advantage of”,
“funniest one who doesn’t have a serious
bone in his body”,
“one that always gets her way and does
anything to get it”,
“black sheep of the family that no one wants
to claim and no one understands”,
“sickly one who catches every dis-ease known to man and just cant seem to enjoy feeling great”“child that acts out trying to be heard and
seen, trying to be acknowledged”,
“perfect one so beautiful, smart, wise, is a
breath of fresh air, has no flaws”,
“addict who searches through every known substance for happiness and peace”, or
“the one to most likely succeed and no matter what always lands on her feet”.

In groups, it is common for us to be given roles to play. We are assigned an identity -- who we are, what we are, how we should act, and how we should be. These roles often give us the false impression that we have to always be that and we can not be any more or any less than that. We must follow that pattern, follow the group, follow the expectation of others.

As you take an inventory of the different groups of which you are a member, what positions have you consciously chosen and which ones have been assigned to you by someone else? Which ones do you feel obligated to fulfill? Sister, brother, aunt, neighbor, minister, teacher, healer, doctor, painter, nobody, nosey, scared, the one who will always be alone, bossy, president, leader, afraid of everything, great speaker, chatty Kathy, protector, doormat, beautiful. Add your own. Take a look at your choices versus the titles that have been thrown at you.

Together, lets take a look-see. We will acknowledge and thank them, determine whether you would now like to keep them because they serve your life purpose so well or whether you would like to let them go because they never were yours to begin with.
